Kitchener will soon update their Official Plan as we prepare to become a city of over 400,000 people by 2051. The Kitchener Engage page says, “A new Official Plan will guide growth and shape the way that neighbourhoods evolve and change. The new Official Plan needs to be ambitious and clear in our intentions as we plan for the Kitchener of 2051.”
In order to shape the new plan, Kitchener is looking for people who either live, work, go to school, own a business, or rent or own property in Kitchener to apply to the Kitchener 2051 Community Working Group. This soon-to-be created team of volunteers will meet the first Thursday of every month from 5:30pm to 7:30pm from September 2024 to February 2026 (at Kitchener City Hall).
The meetings will provide an opportunity for committee members to “identify city-building challenges, generate ideas, and craft solutions based on personal experiences and by reviewing documents and technical reports provided by City staff.”
The role description states that, “applications from community members who are Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+ identified, people with disabilities, renters, people who are or have experienced homelessness, housing instability, or otherwise equity-denied, and the intersections of these identities and experiences are encouraged.”
