Last year, Kitchener made a Municipal Housing Pledge to build an additional 35,000 homes by 2031. In order to help achieve that goal, Kitchener is permitting “up to four dwelling units on any lot that allows a single-detached dwelling, semi-detached dwelling or street fronting townhouse dwelling, subject to regulations.” You can learn more and provide feedback in several ways this month:

The cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge and the Region of Waterloo have been exploring options for inclusionary zoning, allowing cities to require private developers to include a certain percentage of affordable units within new, multi-unit housing developments. I have written about inclusionary zoning previously, here.
On January 29th (Time TBD), residents can participate in a public meeting about proposed Inclusionary Zoning amendments to the City of Kitchener’s Official Plan and Zoning By-law. This will be a hybrid meeting so those interested can either participate in-person in Council Chambers at Kitchener City Hall or via zoom.
Note: If you would like to speak at the public meeting, please register in advance at: kitchener.ca/delegations. You may also call the City Clerk’s Office at 519-741-2200.

Waterloo has created six ‘Strategic Stories’ to “highlight the connection between the tabled budget and the priorities of Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion, Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action, Complete Community, Infrastructure and Transportation Systems and Innovation and Future- Ready.” Click to view and comment on any or all six of the strategic stories, which include: winter sidewalk clearing, net-zero facilities, affordable housing and more.
